La Maddalena Boat Excursions: Which to Choose: Sailing Boat, Catamaran or Inflatable?
A guide to the different options for visiting the Archipelago and why a vintage sailing ship is a unique choice
Organising a boat trip in the La Maddalena Archipelago means being faced with several options. Tourist motorboats, dinghies for hire, catamarans, and then there are sailing ships. Each has its pros and cons, and the choice depends on what you are looking for: speed and autonomy, comfort and stability, or an authentic and evocative experience.
In this guide we help you navigate your way through the various possibilities, explaining the features, advantages and limitations of each solution. In the end, you will understand why our vintage sailing ship Leonidas represents something different: not just a means of getting around, but a way of experiencing the sea that tells a story, yours.

La Maddalena Excursions by vintage sailing boat
And here we come. Our Leonidas is not simply a sailing boat. It is an authentic 15-metre Latin-sailed sailing ship, a type of vessel that tells centuries of Mediterranean seafaring history.
Features of the Leonidas
-
Type: sailing ship with lateen sail
-
Length15 metres
-
Materials: wood, traditional construction
-
Capacitymaximum 12 passengers
-
Servicesbathroom on board, shaded areas, kitchenette
-
Navigationpredominantly sailing, motor only for manoeuvring in port
What Makes a Period Yacht Special
Sailing on the Leonidas is unlike any other boat experience. Here's why.
The Silence of the Sail
When the wind swells the sails and the engine stops, silence descends on board. All you hear is the water running down the hull, the rhythmic creaking of the wood, the wind in the rigging. It is a sensory experience that connects you with the sea in a deep and authentic way.
The Charm of Wood and Tradition
To board the Leonidas is to take a dip into the past. The smell of wet wood, the attention to detail, the manoeuvres on board that recall ancient techniques. You are not on a means of transport: you are on a boat that has a story to tell.
The Slow Rhythm of Navigation
The sailing ship does not run. It travels at a speed that allows you to observe, to breathe, to savour. The islands slowly reveal themselves, the colours change with the light, and you have time to notice. In a world that is always running, the sailing ship gives you the luxury of slowness.
The Reduced Number of Guests
Maximum 12 people. It means that there is room for everyone, that you can find your own quiet corner, that you know the names of the other guests and crew. You are not a number, you are a guest.
Respect for the Environment
Sailing means zero emissions when sailing. Minimal impact on the marine ecosystem, the possibility of silently approaching the coast without disturbing the fauna. It is the most sustainable way to visit a protected area like the Archipelago.
Access to the Most Beautiful Creeks
Its small size and shallow draught allow the Leonidas to approach beaches and coves where larger boats cannot reach. Not all, but many of the most beautiful coves are within our reach.
Practical Advantages of the Vintage Sailboat
Besides charm, there are concrete advantages:
-
Customised experience: the skipper knows the places, the best times for each stop, the currents, the winds
-
Longer bathroom breaksthe slow pace allows more time for bathing
-
Family atmosphere: at the end of the day, you are a bit like a group of friends
-
Unforgettable photographsthe boat itself is a perfect subject, and the views from the Latin sail are unique
Disadvantages (For Intellectual Honesty)
Let's face it: the sailing ship is not for everyone.
-
Depends on the windIf there is no wind, you sail by motor. If it is too windy, the itinerary may change.
-
SlowIf you have little time and want to see as many islands as possible in a few hours, the sailing ship is not for you.
-
SkiddingLike all sailboats, the sailing ship heels. Nothing of concern, but those who are particularly sensitive may initially feel discomfort.
-
Essential ServicesDon't expect the bar with blenders and techno music. On board there is the essential, because the essential is the sea.
Comparative Table
To help you better visualise the differences, here is a summary table.

How to Choose: Questions to ask yourself before booking
To guide you in your choice, ask yourself these questions.
What do you look for in experience?
If you are looking for relaxation, silence, authenticity and deep contact with the sea, the vintage sailing ship is the right choice.
If you are looking for comfort, stability and ample space, the catamaran might be for you.
If you are looking for adventure, freedom and want to manage the day independently, dinghy is the option.
If you are looking for affordability and want to see the main islands without too much pretension, the tourist boat is fine.
If you are looking for sport and want to actively participate in, the modern sailing boat is suitable.
Who do you travel with?
-
Couple seeking romance: vintage sailing ship, perhaps exclusively for the two of you
-
Family with young children: catamaran or sailing boat (with a skipper who knows the needs of children)
-
Group of friends: dinghy or sailing boat exclusively
-
Elderly people or people with mobility problems: catamaran or tourist motor vessel
How much time do you have?
If you have only one day and you want to see as much as possible, consider dinghy or motorboat.
If you have a day but want to live an unforgettable experience rather than “stamping” stages, choose the sailing ship.
If you have several days, you can combine: one day on a sailing boat and one on land or with another boat.
Why More and More People Choose Sailing
In recent years, there has been a rediscovery of slow, authentic, experiential travel. People no longer just want to “do” things, but to “experience” moments. The sailing boat responds perfectly to this need.
On board the Leonidas, you are not a tourist. You are a sailor. You are part of something bigger: the history of sailing, the thousand-year relationship between man and the sea, the beauty of an archipelago that must be respected and admired with the eyes of those who love it, not just those who visit it.
Our guests often tell us: “I didn't think you could experience such emotion in a day trip”. And that is exactly what we try to offer: not a trip, but an experience.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it true that you get bored on a sailing ship because you go slowly?
Absolutely not! The slowness is really the beauty. It allows you to observe details that you would miss at higher speeds: the changing colour of the water, the changing contours of the islands, the sunsets that last for hours. And then there are the swimming stops, the snorkelling, the chatting with other guests. Time flies.
I'm afraid of getting seasick. Better the catamaran?
The catamaran is objectively more stable and suitable for those who suffer from seasickness. That said, the Leonidas is a boat with a lateen sail, which tends to roll less than other sailboats. Moreover, as it almost always sails in sheltered areas of the archipelago, the sea is generally calm. If you are very sensitive, talk to us before booking: we can advise you on the best period or evaluate together the most suitable solution.
Can I charter the sailboat without a skipper?
No, the Leonidas is a vintage boat that requires specific knowledge to be manoeuvred. Furthermore, in order to navigate the Archipelago safely and in compliance with the Park's rules, it is essential to have an experienced skipper on board. Our skipper is not just a “driver”, but a guide who knows every corner of the Archipelago.
How much does a sailing boat excursion cost compared to other options?
Our shared tour costs 140€ per person. Considering that it is a full day (7 hours) on an exclusive boat with a maximum of 12 people, value for money is excellent. Catamarans have similar or higher prices. Dinghies, divided by the number of people, can cost less but you have to consider fuel, licence and self-organisation. Motorboats cost less but offer a completely different experience.
Can children participate in the sailing trip?
Of course! Children love the sailboat. The atmosphere is relaxed, they can help the skipper with manoeuvres (if they want to), go swimming, explore the coves. Of course, they must always be supervised by an adult. For the little ones, please contact us to check availability and possible facilities.
